The 8pm mind

Absolutely strange, is the description for why I have remained in the office. Description of why? What exactly does that mean? Most likely, it refers to the description of the reason I am in the office, when normally I would not. It is strage isn't it?

Two coffee mugs rest on the table infront of me. Actually, behind the keyboard infront of me. Which technically, yes, is infront of me. Very interesting. Behind, and yet infront. It's all relative. What if the definition of the keyboard's facing is inversed? Then the coffee mugs would be both infront of me and the keyboard. But the keyboard will still be infront of me. However, I would be behind the keyboard. Clever...

On the right of the monitor are two Mount Franklin bottles. One is a 1.5 litre and the other is 600ml. Both bottles sport the same style of bottle caps -- blue, with vertical cuts for twisting grip. I can swap them... ... clever!

Time to go home...

  • You have failed to specify a global coordinate system for your office i.e. pick a spot and call it the "center".

Alternatively, you have to specify a transformation function which discribes the interaction between the different coordinate systems you are using. i.e. a transformation matrix between your own coordinate system and lets say the monitor.

If you right this all down really precisely, you will be able to figure out what is infront/behind of what.

    Hope this helps.

  • Wow! That actually works. I set the base of office door as the reference points (0,0,0,100,0,0) using (0,1,0) as the up vector and (0,0,1) as "front". Then I rotated the world by 45 degrees counter-clockwise about the y-axis and translated (0,156,-157) to find the center of my head. Since the keyboard could be reached by translating (0,-50,35), a positive z, we can determine that the keyboard is infront relative from my sitting position. Similarly, the mugs were at a positive z translation; that is, also infront relative to me. However, we have to define the facing of the keyboard. Assuming that the keyboard faces us, then at the keyboard coordinate, we would first rotate 180 degrees about (0,1,0). After which, we would need to translate a negative z to reach the mugs. Thus, the mugs are behind the keyboard. Clever... (all coordinates in centimeters)
